3 Tips to Help Keep Your Drains Clear and Clean
November 8th, 2017Do you know what causes drains to become blocked in your home? If you understand what is causing the blockage, you’re one step closer to eliminating more problems in the future! Clogged drains cause all sorts of problems and are a big hassle to deal with. Most clogs occur in the sink, toilet, or bathtub, so prevention is the best way to keep your drains clear. At Guaranteed Plumbing & Heating Inc., we have three tips to help keep your drains clear and clean.
1. Clean Drains a Few Times Each Month
There are a few quick ways to give your drains a simple clean. One way is to fill up ice cube trays with vinegar and water. Freeze them and then drop them down your garbage disposal and grind them up. Some people even add a little salt down the disposal to grind away tough grease that might be in there. To clean bathroom drains, use a bent wire brush and a mixture of one tablespoon salt and a quarter cup of vinegar. Let this solution sit for about an hour, then run hot water down the drain to rinse.
2. Be Mindful of What Goes Down the Drain
Some items should never go down your drain, even if you have a working garbage disposal. This includes grease, coffee grounds, and clumps of hair. Most hardware stores sell hair catchers for bathroom drains, and there are all kinds of drain gate options for your kitchen sink, as well. Grease can be poured into a reusable container and coffee grounds should be tossed out in your trashcan or compost pile. If you run into a situation where your sink requires a thorough drain cleaning in Philadelphia, then give Guaranteed Plumbing & Heating, Inc. a call. We are always available to help.
3. Utilize Hot Water
Running hot water down your drains is one of the simplest and easiest ways to keep them clear. Hot water also cleans out any leftover food that could be lodged in your drain. If you notice a clog in your garbage disposal, then it’s a better idea to do the opposite and run cold water down the drain. Cold water will keep grease and oil in an almost solid state which will allow the garbage disposal to clean it out the next time it’s turned on. If you need the assistance of a professional for any drain clearing in Philadelphia, then give Guaranteed Plumbing & Heating, Inc. a call.
