5 Things That Can Clog Your Drain

May 26th, 2020

It’s happened to every homeowner at least once since they bought their property. You go to wash your hands after using the bathroom or cooking — and the water doesn’t drain, no matter how much you run it. What could be causing water to pool in your sink this time? There are an almost endless number of hazards that can clog your plumbing system, but here are five of the most common clog culprits.

  • All Lengths of Hair: Many believe that a clogged drain in Philadelphia can only happen for people with long hair. This is not the case. Even short hair can collect with other pipe debris and lead to clogs.
  • Soap: When you use too much soap, have too many bubbles, or even have leftover soap scum after a shower, it goes into your pipes and hardens. This can quickly collect, clot to other materials in your drain, and lead to a clog.
  • Toiletries: While feminine products should not ever go down the drain, they are hardly the only toiletry to cause a problem. Even “disposable” wipes rarely break down and often lead to clogs.
  • Roots: This is one problem that is hard to keep track of. Roots from nearby hearty shrubs and trees often make their way into pipes. This can lead to massive clogs, among other issues.
  • Food: Even for those with garbage disposals, putting food down the drain is a bad idea. The worst foods to put in your drain include grease, coffee grounds, and stringy vegetables like asparagus and celery.
