Complete Your Spring Cleaning With a Drain Cleaning

May 20th, 2021

Very few homeowners relish the idea of having to pay for a pipe repair, especially just as the summer season gets rolling and you’re envisioning yourself on a beach somewhere else. However, the reality is that winter can be hard on your pipes and lead to many problems you won’t notice until the damage becomes readily apparent.

As you finish up your spring cleaning, it’s worth doing a little spring cleaning for your drains, too, just to ensure they continue to operate the way they’re supposed to. Here are some of the main areas you should focus your attention on:

Check for Burst Pipes

Winter’s freezing temperatures can cause pipes to burst, but that doesn’t always mean the issue is apparent. Sometimes, the pipe will only break open a little bit, and the water will freeze over the hole, leaving the pipe functional while the temperatures remain cold. The story changes entirely when the weather warms, though.

Before you have a plumbing emergency on your hands during a summertime cookout, it’s worth checking different drains for signs of abnormal draining. This might mean the water drains slowly — indicating a blockage of ice or other debris — or it drains faster than you remember, which would indicate a hole in the plumbing. In either case, it’s necessary to repair your plumbing so that you don’t end up with a flooded home when guests come over to enjoy the warm weather with you.

Clean Your Outdoor Drainage Systems

While you must take care of your indoor drains, you should devote some time to cleaning out your sewer and gutters as well. Summertime often comes with heavy rainfall, and it’s essential to have a place for that water to go. Ensuring that your gutters and sewer are clear will protect your home from severe damage that could come from flash flooding.

Check Your Sump Pump

In addition to checking your outdoor drainage equipment to ensure it’s in working order, you should also take steps to protect the inside of your home from flooding risks by servicing your sump pump.

Your sump pump’s job is simple: when water begins to reach a specific height, it’s supposed to start bailing it out. Taking the simple step of tossing a bucket of water into the sump pit to see if the pump engages will let you know whether you need to call a professional to repair it.
