How to Get Your Air Conditioning System Ready for Cooling Season

March 15th, 2018

While it might be hard to imagine in the midst of winter, warmer weather is on its way. This means that homeowners who have air conditioning systems should start thinking about how to prepare them for the season ahead. A properly working air conditioning system is a valuable asset, especially when summer rolls in.

At Guaranteed Plumbing & Heating, Inc., we help customers with a wide range of heating and air conditioning needs. Whether you need a Philadelphia air conditioning repair or you need to have a new system installed, our team can help. Guaranteed Plumbing & Heating, Inc. is also available for air conditioning repair in Philadelphia. We know that you want to get the most out of your air conditioning system, so we’ve got a few pointers to help you prepare for the warmer days ahead.

1. Clear debris from the condensate-removal system.

One of the first maintenance tips for your air conditioning system is to check the condensate-removal system. For your condenser to work properly, it requires a steady stream of airflow. Your condenser should have about two feet of clear space around it, and it should be free from any sort of branches, wood piles, or shrubbery.

Your condenser works hard all summer long by sucking in air, leaves, and pollen, so it’s important to give it a good cleaning before the upcoming season. The best way to do this is by simply using your garden hose to give it a good spray. If necessary, you can use a non-abrasive cleaner, but this usually isn’t necessary.

2. Check the components of the condensate-removal system.

Condensation is naturally occurring in any air conditioning system as the result of warm air passing through the cooling coil. In some air conditioning systems, the collected moisture goes into a gravity-fed drain.

In other systems, it’s filtered into a pan beneath the blower unit. If your particular unit has a pump, test it to ensure that it’s working properly. If your unit doesn’t have a pump, then check to see if it has a kill switch. This is a water sensor wired to a specific height in the pan.

3. Change the filters.

Your air conditioning system filters are located where the duct meets the unit. It’s generally recommended to check the filters once monthly. If your filter is clogged, it will slow down the airflow coming through your blower unit, and the cooling coil will freeze. If this happens, you run the risk of your system shutting down.

You have options when it comes to filter grades. Since some grades are designed to reduce allergens, these will need to be changed more frequently. Learn more by calling us at 215-240-8610.
