How to Tell When Your Water Heater is Failing

November 1st, 2019

Water heaters are an essential part of any home. Without one, we’d be consigned to washing our dishes, washing our clothes, and bathing in freezing cold water every day. We might take our heaters for granted, expecting them to last forever, but it’s all too common for them to give out and leave us to clean up the disaster that follows. However, if you know what signs to look for, you can preemptively avoid catastrophe and replace your hot water heater in your Philadelphia home without dealing with the fallout of its failure.

  • Whether gas or electric, a water heater functions by heating your water storage tank from the bottom. Over time sediment builds up and blocks the heating source so that the stored water does not heat as well. If your hot water feels increasingly lukewarm, then that is a potential sign that a buildup of sediment is preventing proper heating. Try to keep in mind how high you must turn your faucet for hot water when you get in the shower.
  • That same buildup of sediment can also cause your hot water flow to appear cloudy. An easy way to judge the condition of your hot water is to take two glasses and fill one with cold water and one with hot water. If your hot water looks significantly murkier than your cold water, then it’s highly likely that your water heater needs replacing as its a clear indication of sediment buildup in your heater. Additionally, hot water that appears slightly brown in tint means that your water heater is rusting, which is also a health hazard that should be addressed immediately.
  • A noisy water heater is also an indication of a need for replacement. Once again, the culprit is the sediment layer that can build up at the bottom of your tank. The mineral layer will create pockets of air in the bottom of the tank, which will cause rattling and popping noises whenever the heater is in use.
  • Another indication to check for is leaking beneath your water tank. No matter how small the leak, pooling water beneath indicates the formation of cracks from corrosion within. This will eventually accumulate into serious damage that could flood your whole home. Replacing your water tank immediately is the best course of action to avoid such water damage to the rest of your house.
