Tired Of That Running Toilet All Night Long? Here Are Some Simple Fixes
February 25th, 2013For those of you own a home may have come across a running toilet one time or another, and there is nothing more frustrating then hearing the water run all night long. This may not be an emergency plumbing situation, but it is still something that needs to be addressed. Since the makeup of a toilet hasn’t changed much over the years they make it fairly simple to fix, being that they consists of the same few parts.
When a toilet continues to run most people always take the lid off the tank, even if they have no idea how to fix it, it just seems to be routine, because where else could the problem be coming from? There should be a small tube that sits in a pipe, this small tube releases just the right amount of water so that the toilet bowl fills back up after it has been flushed. However, if this small tube is not sitting in the larger pipe correctly and releasing water, the toilet bowl will not fill up making it not flush. By simply putting it back in place and reattaching it should fix the problem if that is the case. Easy, right?
If that is not the problem then check the chain that is attached to the flapper. Sometimes if the chain is too short it won’t allow the flapper to close at the bottom, which causes the water to constantly leak into the bowl. Or if the chain is too long the flapper wont be able to open enough for the water to flush. This is also another simple fix; just adjust the chain to the proper length and voilà.
So, if none of those fixes has ended the running toilet problem then replacing the flapper might be what it takes to eliminate your toilet hissing at you all day and night. Investigate the flapper at the bottom of the tank, is it worn out? If so it may be time to replace it.
