Philadelphia’s drain network is one of the oldest in the country. We clear the clogs cabling cannot reach, and we do it with a camera in the line so you see what we see.

The Philadelphia Water Department maintains more than 3,000 miles of sewer, and a combined sewer system serves roughly 60 percent of the city. That changes how clogs behave here. A slow sink in a Center City row home is not the same problem as a slow sink in a 1990s split-level in Bucks County. In older Philly neighborhoods, the drain in your basement is connected to a single pipe that also carries street runoff, which means a heavy storm can push backups upstream into homes that were running fine the day before.

Guaranteed Plumbing & Heating has been clearing drains and sewer lines across Philadelphia, Bucks County, and Montgomery County since 1990. We run drain cleaning for routine clogs, hydro jetting for serious grease and root buildup, and camera line inspection on every job large enough to need one. Below is how each method works, when each is the right call, and what to expect.

Why drain cleaning and hydro jetting are different in Philadelphia

Two things make drain work in this city different from drain work in newer suburbs.

  • The combined sewer system

According to the Philadelphia Water Department, roughly half of Philadelphia’s neighborhoods are served by combined sewers, where a single pipe carries both household wastewater and street stormwater to the treatment plant. When the system gets overloaded during heavy rain, hydraulic pressure can push backwards into private drain lines. If your basement floor drain or basement toilet only backs up during big storms, the issue is almost never inside your house. It is the relationship between your lateral and the city main.

  • Old building stock with cast iron and clay

Pre-1950 row homes across Northeast Philly, South Philly, Fishtown, Kensington, and West Philly were typically plumbed with cast iron stacks and clay-tile lateral sewers. Both materials degrade. Cast iron scales internally and loses diameter year by year. Clay laterals develop offset joints where tree roots intrude. By the time water is backing up, the inside of the pipe is often half or two-thirds smaller than the day it was installed.

This is why a standard drain snake fixes the symptom but not the cause. A cable punches a hole through the clog and water flows again, but the grease shelf, the root mass, and the scale are all still there. They start collecting fresh debris within weeks. Hydro jetting is the difference between clearing the path and cleaning the pipe.

Drain cleaning and hydro jetting services we run in Philadelphia

We use the right tool for the job rather than defaulting to one method on every call. The most common service types in Philadelphia:

  • Standard drain cabling

For single-fixture clogs (one sink, one tub, one toilet) where the issue is local. Fast, affordable, appropriate when the line itself is in decent shape.

  • Hydro jetting for main lines and laterals

High-pressure water scours the inside of the pipe back to its full diameter. We use hydro jetting for grease-heavy kitchen lines, root-invaded laterals, scale buildup in cast iron, and any line that has needed cabling more than once in 12 months.

  • Camera line inspection

A fiber-optic camera fed through a cleanout shows what is actually inside your pipe. We use it before quoting any repair larger than a single fixture clear, after every hydro jet, and as a standalone diagnostic when something is wrong but no single fixture explains it. We can record the inspection and share the file.

  • Sewer line and lateral cleaning

From the cleanout out to the city tap. This is where most chronic Philly backups actually live, especially in homes with original clay laterals.

  • Curb trap cleaning and inspection

Older Philly homes have a curb trap between the house lateral and the city sewer. When it clogs, every drain in the home slows or backs up at once. We clean and inspect them and identify when one is collapsed beyond cleaning.

  • Floor drain, tub, shower, and sink line cleaning

Routine clogs in any branch line. Same-day in most cases.

  • Recurring clog diagnosis

If you have called another company twice in a year for the same drain, the line itself is telling you something. We will camera it, find the cause, and quote either a hydro jet plus monitoring or a repair, depending on what we see.

Pricing, coupons, and financing

We do not publish flat drain cleaning or hydro jetting prices because the right method and the right scope are different on every job. Pricing is confirmed on-site after diagnosis and before any work begins. We do not change the price after the fact.

Current coupon

We run a $20 off coupon on video camera line inspections. The coupon must be mentioned at the time of scheduling, is limited to one per household, applies Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and cannot be combined with other offers. See the full list at the Guaranteed Plumbing coupons page.

Financing

For larger jobs (extensive hydro jetting on multiple lines, sewer lateral repairs revealed by camera inspection, curb trap replacements), we offer instant approval financing through GoodLeap.

What to expect when we arrive

When you call 215-342-7200, this is how a typical drain call runs.

1

Triage on the phone.

We ask what is slow or backed up, when it started, and whether anything (heavy rain, tree near the line, recurring history) might be relevant. That narrows whether we are sending a cabling truck or a jetter.

2

Diagnostic walk-through on arrival.

Before any work, the plumber checks every drain in the house. A single slow fixture is local. Multiple slow fixtures point to a main line. Water in the basement floor drain when nothing is running points to the lateral or curb trap.

3

The right tool, not the only tool.

If a cable clears it and the line behind looks fine on camera, we are done. If we see grease shelves, scale, or root intrusion, we recommend hydro jetting and explain why cabling alone will not hold.

4

Camera after the work.

For any main line or lateral job, we run the camera back through to confirm the line is fully clear and document the condition.

5

Clean cleanup and paperwork.

We do not leave a mess behind, and you get an itemized invoice with photos or video when relevant.
